Normally I enjoy Lilith Saintcrow’s work, but this one just irked me the whole time. The protagonist exhibits almost no agency until maybe the last quarter of the. It’s bad enough that Selene is part slave to Nikolai, the Prime Power of Saint City, but she’s got her brother Danny and she’s got her job at the college. Lilith Saintcrow is an American author of urban fantasy, historical fantasy, paranormal romance She has also published several short stories [1] and the free online serial Selene[2] (with characters from her Dante Valentine series).

I don’t know, maybe that’s the point Saintcrow was trying to make: Overall a very average read bordering towards boring. Basically, the set up, the development and the action is perfect. When she decided to release the whole things as a novel, combined with two short stories I’d also missed, I was ecstatic.

After meeting Nik and Selene through Dante Valentine’s eyes it was a delight to be able to sink into their story. Selene is such a badass character. What does Nikolai see in Selene, anyway? You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. This was a story about a Sex-Witch Selene who harnesses her powers using sex to perform magic. Being a sexwitch, there was the potential for her ljlith be softer, but Saintcrow doesn’t write like that. I have supported her writing and her varied novels but I don’t appreciate what she has done with Selene.

It also makes Selene come across as stupid, which is a pity. The rest of the time likith just gripes about being a slave to her curse or to her manipulative, abusive, controlling FWB Nikolai. It’s great in the way that all Lilith Saintcrow’s books are: The only thing I didn’t love about the book was the ending.

I’m pretty sure most children know that. I just have one question: Maybe sometime in the future, I’ll change my mind and go back and buy her yet to be published novels but for now I won’t. I had wondered about her but hadn’t checked for other books in the series. One chapter every Wednesday. Let me start by saying, I really lilitg this book.

The first bit was published in the anthology Hotter Than Hell. No trivia or quizzes yet. That being said, despite the feeling of wanting more depth, I did enjoy this book – it would be particularly strong if it functioned as the opening to a series.

I can deal with some “denial” about how she doesn’t get he loves her, but it reaches some silly levels as the novel goes along. Her bond with her brother realistic, her lilit with her Vampire Master and her own curse suitably claustrophobic.
